Chapter

Eleven

A bright morning sun blinked through the leaves of the tree outside my bedroom window, dappling my face with its warm sunshine. Raindrops dotted the window, but the storm cleared in the night. I threw the blankets off and stuffed my feet into my slippers. After rubbing my face, I shuffled down the hall to find Raven peacefully slumbering on the couch, her body encased within a cocoon of blankets. The sound of my slippers’ bottoms dragging across the hardwood was enough to rouse her. She blinked then found me and smiled. “Good morning,” she greeted.

“Good morning,” I returned. “How’d you sleep?”

“Blissfully,” she answered. “You?”

“Much the same,” I said.

“No nightmares about the sea?”

I shook my head. “Nope. I’ll credit you with that. Thanks for hanging out.”

“Thanks for having me.”

She pulled back her legs to allow me a seat on the couch. “I still don’t know where to start,” I told her. “But it’s my day off, so if you’re free, we could do some research together.” The thought crossed my mind that I could return to Sean and join him on a treasure hunt in exchange for his mermaid knowledge. But with Raven already here and raring to dig in, I figured we might as well. Sean could wait. Never mind the fact I was a little nervous at the thought of spending time alone with him. A crush was a complication I didn’t need right now.

Raven nodded. “I don’t work till later,” she said. “I’ve also got a great place to start.”

Raven’s destination was the Cornellis Nautical Museum, located on the southwestern corner of the island. The red brick building joined together with a decommissioned lighthouse overlooking the rocky shore. It wasn’t much, a small space for a museum, but it borrowed atmosphere from its location, providing a certain intriguing mystique. As I pulled into the lot, I took note of its scant number of visitors. “Not many people here.” Only another four vehicles sat in the parking lot, of which I assumed at least one belonged to staff.

“It’s a Monday,” Raven explained. “Not that it gets particularly busy on the weekends, either. But enough to stay afloat. Cornellis Island, for all its charms, doesn’t attract a great deal of tourism. The tourists that do visit usually swing through here. And for the same reason as us.”

I shot her a look. “You’re not the only mermaid enthusiast?”

“We’re out there, Brandi.”

I laughed. “All right, let’s see what this quaint museum has to offer.”

The front door entered into the gift shop at the back of which was the entrance to the exhibits. Alongside the entrance sat an older, redheaded woman behind a small desk. As we passed through the kitschy knickknacks, keychains with mermaids, wallets with anchors, mugs featuring the pirates’ skull and crossbones, the clerk smiled brightly at us. “Morning! Two admissions?”

“Yes, please,” I said, passing her my card.

“Twenty euros,” she said, swiping it. Then, as she passed back my card along with two tickets, she said, “Enjoy the exhibits. Fascinating lore to take home with you.
